Tackle the Cape's tough terrain

Here’s the schedule of hikes for the Eastham Hiking Club for the month of February. For more information on the group, check out the feature I wrote for the Cape Codder back in December.

Hikes start at 9 a.m., are FREE and open to the public. Rain/heavy snow CANCELS.

Hikes are 4 to 6-1/2 miles in 2 to 2-1/2 hours on wooded paths with some soft sand and hills.

There’s a carpooling option; meet at Orleans (south of rotary), Stop & Shop, left lot off main entrance.

SCHEDULE FOR FEBRUARY

Feb. 3: Wellfleet ~ Bound Brook Island 2 ¼ Hrs (Carpool 8:15) Leader(s): Chuck Duck Harbor ~ Rte. 6 L at Wellfleet Center lights, L at fork, go 3.2m. R at triangle in road, 1mi to parking Hike from Duck Harbor to Bound Brook Is. Visit historic houses and cemetery on wooded paths.

Feb. 10: Dennis - Crowes Pasture & Sesuit Harbor (Carpool 8:20) Leader(s): Don & Bob Rt 6 to Exit 9, N on Rt 134 to R on 6A, .8mi L on School St, 1st R on South St, .7mi to limited parking Hike woodland trails & marsh to Crowes Pasture, Quivett Creek, bay beach & Sesuit Harbor.

Feb. 17: Provincetown – Snail Rd. East (Carpool 8:10) Leader(s): Mark RT 6-3/4 mile past “Entering Provincetown” sign park on Rt 6 opposite left turn to unmarked Snail Rd. Hike the spectacular dunes east of main Snail Rd trail. See dune shacks, walk the ocean beach.

Feb. 24: Truro – East Harbor (Pilgrim Lake) Dunes & Beach (Car Pool 8:15) Leader(s): Chuck Exit route 6 at High Head Road. Take first left fork onto dirt road to parking lot at end. Two-plus hours in soft sand, over dunes along the back side of East Harbor to a vista, past dune shack to ocean return.
