Head out with the Eastham Hiking Club this spring


The Eastham Hiking Club on the dunes of Provincetown in November.

Here’s the latest schedule information for the Eastham Hiking Club, updated through April.

Hikes start at 9 a.m., are FREE and open to the public. Rain/heavy snow CANCELS.

Hikes are 4 to 6-1/2 miles in 2 to 2-1/2 hours on wooded paths with some soft sand and hills.

There’s a carpooling option; meet at Orleans (south of rotary), Stop & Shop, left lot off main entrance.

SCHEDULE THROUGH APRIL

Feb. 17: Provincetown – Snail Rd. East (Carpool 8:10) Leader(s): Mark RT 6-3/4 mile past “Entering Provincetown” sign park on Rt 6 opposite left turn to unmarked Snail Rd. Hike the spectacular dunes east of main Snail Rd trail. See dune shacks, walk the ocean beach.

Feb. 24: Truro – East Harbor (Pilgrim Lake) Dunes & Beach (Car Pool 8:15) Leader(s): Chuck Exit route 6 at High Head Road. Take first left fork onto dirt road to parking lot at end. Two-plus hours in soft sand, over dunes along the back side of East Harbor to a vista, past dune shack to ocean return. March 2: Provincetown — Beech Forest, Clapps Pond ~ 2.5 hrs ~ Carpool 8:10 ~ Leader(s): Don & Bob Rte. 6 to Provincetown, R at first traffic light onto Race Point Rd., Beech Forest lot 1/2 mile on left. Walk Beech Forest, high dunes, smallpox cemetery and around Clapp’s Pond.

March 9: Truro — Longnook ~ AF Base & Jenny Lind (Carpool 8:20) Leader(s): Don & Bob Route 6, R at Longnook Road (1.2 miles after Pamet Rd exit) and follow to parking lot at the end Hike woodlands and Old Kings Highway to former Air Force Station and Jenny Lind Tower.

March 16: Truro – Rose Road, MITRE sites, cliffs ~ Car Pool 8:25 Leader(s): Chuck Rt 6, R on (unmarked) Rose Rd. immediately after “Entering Truro” sign. Park 200 yards down road. Hike woodland trails to highest cliff, return past 3 MITRE Sites and Snow Pond.

March 23: Wellfleet — 7 Ponds area and Modern Houses Leader(s): Mark Rte. 6, R on Gull Pond Road (opposite Mobey Dicks). Go 1.1 miles to L on School House Hill Rd, .3 miles, R to parking Hike will pass most of seven ponds and visit “Modern Architecture” and other houses of interest.

March 30: Provincetown — Herring Cove, Hatches Harbor. Carpool 8:10 ~ 2 1⁄4 hrs Leader: Chuck Rte. 6 to end, right at Provincelands Road, L into Herring Cove Beach parking lot, far right side. Walk to Hatches Harbor & Race Point Lighthouse (may see whales), return over Snake Hill. 2 1⁄4 hours.

April 6: Truro — Ballston Beach, South (2 1⁄4 hours — Carpool 8:20) Leader(s): Don & Bob Rte. 6 to Truro, Pamet Roads exit, R then L to South Pamet Rd., parking lot at end of road. Hike South along ocean cliffs to MITRE Site and return via woodland trails.

April 13: Truro – Clay Cliffs Carpool 8:10 (One way hike) New Hike. Leader(s): Mark Route 6, R at Longnook Road (1.2m after Pamet Rd exit) and follow to parking lot at the end. Carpool to start. Hike around Highland Light, then a long beach walk beneath the high, dramatic and scenic Truro clay cliffs.

April 20: Brewster — Nickerson, Ruth Pond Leader(s): Chuck Rte. 6A to Nickerson entrance. Continue on entry road for 1.8 miles to Fisherman’s Landing entry on left. Walk woodland trails and fire roads around Cliff, Higgins and Little Cliff ponds.

April 27: Truro — Ballston Beach, North. Carpool, 8:20 Leader(s): Don & Bob Rte. 6 to Truro, Pamet Roads exit, R then L to South Pamet Rd, parking lot at end of road. Bearberry Hill, north ocean cliffs, Ball estate, Old Kings highway and cranberry bog
